Nursery Curriculum
Curriculum Intent
At Vale View Nursery, we believe that children learn best through curiosity, exploration and meaningful first-hand experiences. Inspired by the Curiosity Approach, we create an enabling environment that sparks awe and wonder, encouraging children to investigate, question, create and develop a lifelong love of learning.
We recognise that every child arrives with unique experiences, interests and strengths. Through strong partnerships with parents and other professionals, we build upon children's prior knowledge and provide the foundations they need to thrive. We are committed to nurturing confident, independent and resilient learners who feel valued, respected and capable.
Communication and language are at the heart of our curriculum. Through high-quality interactions, rich conversations, storytelling, singing, rhymes and sustained shared thinking, we develop children's vocabulary, listening skills and confidence to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings. We believe that strong communication skills underpin all future learning and enable children to build positive relationships with others.
Our carefully planned indoor and outdoor environments provide open-ended resources and uninterrupted opportunities for child-led play, exploration and discovery. Skilled adults observe children's interests, extend learning through purposeful interactions and support children to develop the Characteristics of Effective Learning: playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically.
We aim for every child to leave our nursery as a confident communicator and a resilient learner ready to embrace the next stage of their educational journey.
Curriculum Implementation
Inspired by the Curiosity Approach, we create rich, inviting environments that encourage children to investigate, discover and make sense of the world around them. Our provision is thoughtfully designed to provoke curiosity, inspire creativity and support children to become active participants in their own learning.
Our curriculum is implemented in line with the requirements of the EYFS Statutory Framework and Development Matters. Learning is responsive to children's interests, developmental needs and fascinations, whilst ensuring progression across all seven areas of learning and development. We place particular emphasis on the three prime areas—Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, and Physical Development—as these provide the foundations upon which all future learning is built.
Communication and language underpin every aspect of our practice. Skilled practitioners model rich vocabulary, engage children in meaningful conversations and use sustained shared thinking to deepen understanding. Stories, rhymes, songs and storytelling are woven throughout the day, creating language-rich experiences that develop children's speaking, listening and comprehension skills. Adults carefully tune into children's interests and interactions, extending language through purposeful questioning, discussion and play.
Mathematics is embedded throughout our daily provision and is supported by the principles of White Rose Maths. Children develop mathematical understanding through practical exploration, play and real-life experiences. Mathematical language is modelled consistently, helping children to develop confidence and fluency in their mathematical thinking.
Children are given uninterrupted time to engage deeply in play, explore open-ended resources and follow their own interests. Practitioners observe closely, identify children's next steps and skilfully scaffold learning through interactions, questioning and shared experiences. This responsive approach ensures that learning remains meaningful, engaging and appropriately challenging for every child.
Natural, authentic and open-ended resources encourage creativity, critical thinking and independent learning. Through high-quality continuous provision, children are supported to develop the Characteristics of Effective Learning: playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically.
Reading and a love of stories are at the heart of our curriculum. Children enjoy daily opportunities to share books, listen to stories, join in with rhymes and develop early literacy skills.
